While terrorism cannot be tolerated, the beliefs of others should be respected and tolerated as long as those beliefs do not include harming other people. And who on Earth should make this requirement into worldwide laws?
I do not believe that Buddha was the greatest person that ever lived on Earth. Yes, a lot of what he said was wise things, however believing that he was the greatest person ever is absurd.
Nor I do not believe that Mohammad was the greatest person that ever lived on Earth. Yes, a lot of what he said was wise things, however believing that he was the greatest person ever is absurd.
And I do not believe that Jesus was the greatest person that ever lived on Earth. Yes, a lot of what he said was wise things, however believing that he was the greatest person ever is absurd.
There have been lots and lots and lots of great people who have lived on Earth, however I think the goodness of a person to be more important than greatness. Greatness implies that one has had the attention of lots of people and not everyone who has been great has been good. Hitler was great in that he had the attention of a lot of people, but he was also not good to a lot of people (especially the millions that he had murdered or who were killed in the war to stop him) either.
So it is more important to judge people for their goodness not their greatness. And it is not a person’s public face that can be considered for goodness as you cannot pretend you are a good person in public than go home and abuse your spouse or children or fight with your neighbors. It is that solid and internal feeling of love within a person and their actions towards all other people that is the best judge of a person’s goodness.
And it is what you do, not what you believe that determines your goodness. It is not right to use your religion or beliefs as a club to beat down other people. You must respect that other people have their own beliefs (and perhaps prophets) and that those beliefs may be different than yours. This is tolerance and respect for other people and in having this tolerance and respect you can be a good person.
Know too that if you use your beliefs as weapons against other people than they can use those same weapons against you. If you use terrorism to intimidate and destroy your enemies, can not they also use weapons to destroy those that are dear to you too. And in the end, won’t this mass destruction using terrorism, war, and violence just lead to the end of the human race?
I know that you want to survive. And you want your family and off spring to survive too. But in a 100 years from now, few will know about you or your family and after 1000 years no one will know about you at all. What do you know about each of your ancestors from 1000 years ago? Yes, your digital pictures, videos, and words may survive for thousands and thousands of years as part of the record about who you were, but what meaning will it have to the people living in the future. They will have their own lives to live, as you do now, and may not have the time nor interest to look for long at your pictures with what will probably be funny to them: your clothes and hair styles. As funny for us to look back just 30 or 40 years ago at the clothes and hair styles of the 60’s and 70’s!
And what of the technology 100 years from now? 100 years ago we could not fly in the air! And it was just 50 years ago that we started to travel into space and to the moon. And it has just been a little more than 10 years ago that we could communicate around the world instantaneously via the Internet. And of course there is more than chatting and game playing going on the Internet. Vast amounts of information about everything known is being stored and searchable via the Internet. You want to know the details about a particular metal, or drug, or experiment, or outcome, or new products, or new ideas, or whatever, you need only Google for the details! And all scientists and experimenters are using this information to build even newer and better products!
Very soon, perhaps no more than 5 or 6 years, automobiles and trucks, will be fully automated and self driven safely! And in no more than 20 years, space elevators will be operational and we will be able to build space craft (more) cheaply in outer space! And what if we allowed and supported scientists to find and propose solutions to world hunger and war as well as diseases too?
The answer to the title of this article, Tolerance VS Terrorism, is that while terrorism cannot be tolerated, the beliefs of others should be respected and tolerated as long as those beliefs do not include harming other people. And who on Earth should make this requirement into worldwide laws? It has been proposed, that we should form a United Free Nations Organization (UFNO). Let’s start by combining those nations and armies who support basic human rights for everyone. This organization can then make and enforce world laws against war and terrorism!
A new political party has been created to promote this idea and it is called the World Peace Political Party! For more information about please visit www.UFNO.org !
